HCC Club Coaches
Laurence Hallgarth - Coaching Officer

I have been with Herts Canoe Club for about 10 years, you will see me either helping out with coaching at the club or on some of the white water trips. I have a preference for the white water side of the sport, which can come across in some of my teaching styles. I am also involved in a number of other outdoor sports.

I’ve been kayaking for 20 years and coaching for about 19 of them as it’s something I really enjoy. I’ve paddled and worked for a number of clubs and centres and have found a great home in Herts Canoe Club. I’m into the recreational side of kayaking as it is by far the most enjoyable way for paddlers and coaches to kayak.
I became a level 3 BCU coach last century which means I teach people on grade 2 to 3 rivers as well as on flat water. I’ve also been national lifeguard champion a few times. I also talk too much especially about kayaking!

I am a BCU Level 2 Coach and hold 4 Star Kayak, 2 Star Canoe and Safety Test awards. I have been paddling since my teens, which,I admit, is several year’s ago. I have been a member of Herts Club since 2005 and an active Instructor and Star Award assessor for BCU and Herts Club awards.
I am also a Scout Leader with 1st Luton Sea Scouts, and hold RYA Powerboat Level 2 Inland, Tidal and Coastal, and Safety Boat for Inland and Tidal. I also have a VHF radio licence, PWC Certificate of Competence, Day Skipper, and Pulling qualifications. For non-water skills, I am an NSRA Range Conducting Officer, and a Small-bore Rifle-shooting Instructor.
I live and work in Luton as an electronics design engineer, I am an active SEA for the Engineering Council and has been married for more than 20 years to his long suffering, but highly tolerant wife, Lynne. I have a grown up stepson, Simon, and a cute dog, Jessie. I also paddle with what must be the oldest pair of paddles, in regular use, at the club.

I have been a member of Herts Canoe Club for many years and paddle mainly white-water. I enjoy sharing my knowledge through coaching.
